Productions are becoming larger and more complex. Crews and post teams are often spread across multiple countries and time zones, while the volume of media and information moving between departments continues to grow.
For The Rebel Fleet, the challenge has always been simple: how can the process be made easier for the people doing the work?
Founded in New Zealand, The Rebel Fleet has grown from an on-set video assist and DIT company into a business building tools and workflows for film and television productions across New Zealand, Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Its work now spans on-set services and equipment rental, dailies, metadata management, editorial workflows, automated VFX pulls and post production.
The strength of the business comes from its people.
The Rebel Fleet’s on-set operators, software developers, engineers, rentals technicians, colourists, editors and post production specialists work closely together. A problem encountered on set might lead to a conversation with the engineering team, a change to a post workflow or an entirely new software feature. What is learned on one production is shared across the business and used to improve the next.
That way of working has also been shaped by the wider New Zealand screen industry.
Many of The Rebel Fleet's best ideas have come from working alongside New Zealand crews. Script supervisors, DITs, camera teams, assistant editors, VFX teams, production offices and post facilities have challenged the company to find better ways of working.
There is a willingness within the New Zealand industry to share knowledge, try new ideas and solve problems together. That culture has helped The Rebel Fleet develop workflows and technology in New Zealand now used on productions around the world.
Konsol, The Rebel Fleet's production workflow platform, is one example. It grew from working directly with crews and seeing how much time was being lost moving information manually between departments and systems.
Konsol connects production metadata from set through to editorial, VFX, post and the studio. It helps teams find the information they need, reduces repetitive work and automates processes that have traditionally relied on spreadsheets, emails and disconnected systems. Today, Konsol supports productions for major international studios, demonstrating that technology developed in New Zealand can solve problems across the global screen industry.
The Rebel Fleet are proud to have supported productions including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Time Bandits, Chief of War, A Minecraft Movie, Predator: Badlands, Heart of the Beast, Klara and the Sun, War Machine, Sweet Tooth and many more.
These projects demonstrate the scale and complexity New Zealand crews and businesses can support while providing opportunities to keep learning, investing and bringing that experience back into the local industry.
The Rebel Fleet will continue to expand its capabilities, develop new technology and find better ways to support productions. But its foundation remains the same: talented people working together, sharing knowledge and being willing to try something new. That is what has allowed The Rebel Fleet to grow from New Zealand, and what the company believes New Zealand continues to offer the global screen industry.
